Graduation Event and seminar

Renew Training and Development (part of Renew Counselling) were privileged to have Dr Andrew Reeves present students with their diplomas at their graduation ceremony on the evening of Thursday, 2nd July.

During the afternoon, Dr Reeves gave a talk (followed by a workshop) entitled…

‘Tight Ropes and Safety Nets: Supporting Young People at Risk in Counselling’

This dealt with working with clients who present ‘at risk’. From suicidal ideation and self-injury – which can challenge even the most experienced practitioner – to when the client is a child or young person and the challenge can sometimes feel even greater, with competing expectations from other stakeholders, such as schools and family/carers.

Knowing when and how to raise issues of concern with others and managing the young person’s expectations surrounding confidentiality can feel like walking a tight rope.  This short seminar reflected on those challenges and consider how, as practitioners, we can also put some safety nets in to support our work: making evidence-based decisions; creating a clear narrative to articulate practice; and understanding how our personal responses will shape and inform our actions.

Dr Andrew Reeves is a Senior Accredited Counsellor/Psychotherapist with over 25 years experience of working in a range of settings, including with children and young people.  He also previously worked as a child protection social worker, with children and families, and additionally worked for many years in secondary care mental health settings in a crisis team.  He has written extensively about working with risk, including Counselling Suicidal Clients (Sage, 2010), Challenges in Counselling: Self-Harm (Hodder Education, 2010), and Working with Risk in Counselling and Psychotherapy (Sage, 2015), in additional to several other texts.  He now works as a counsellor, supervisor, consultant, author and freelance trainer.

He was Lead Author on the Counselling MindEd resource.

The Mayor of Witham’s Christmas Concert

The concert, which was held on

12th December at St Nicolas Church, Witham, was a great success.

Witham Choral Society led the singing with traditional carols and festive songs with students of the Maltings Academy ‘rocking’ the church with modern music and performances.

The night was rounded off with mince pies and drinks.

Renew Training & Development

On Thursday 3rd July 2014 Pete Saunders - a renowned and  engaging speaker - gave a lecture on an important topic in today’s counselling  climate and one that Pete is particularly passionate about…entitled:

‘Resisting the Medicalisation of Distress - Mission Impossible?’

Following this Pete attended the graduates presentation evening and, along with Lord Petre (Lord Lieutenant of Essex and Patron of Renew Counselling), presented the newly-qualified counsellors with certificates recognising  that they had successfully completed their 4-year course at Renew Training &  Development. They were joined by their families in what was a joyous occasion.

The HE Diploma in Counselling Children and Adolescents course is run at the Renew  Counselling headquarters building in Chelmsford in conjunction with the Anglia Ruskin  University.

 The Epic Canal Walk

Well…it’s happened…the first Annual Renew Sponsored Canal Walk took place on Saturday…starting off at Heybridge Basin in bright sunshine and ending in the very beautiful and tranquil Guy Harlings Gardens again in bright sunshine…the only blot on the day was the tremendous thunderstorm and resulting deluge which soaked all of the walkers shortly after setting off. This was a good excuse to have a sit down at Paper Mill Lock Tea Rooms…salads, sandwiches and cream cakes soon revived them and they were off again.

At the finish our intrepid ramblers were treated to a barbeque, drinks and a chance to rest their feet…it was here that the draw took place to win the bumper hamper of luxury chocolates kindly provided by Royal London Asset Management…the winner being Julia Plunkett.

The canal walk is going to be an annual event…if you are interested in taking part, helping to organise fund-raisers or being kept up-to-date with any of the other events we’re planning please email: john@renew-us.org

Mayor of Witham chooses Renew

We are delighted that the Mayor of Witham - Councillor Mrs Janet Money - has chosen Renew Counselling as one of her charities of the year!

Pictured here with Jo Woolven (Group Library Manager) the Mayor is meeting Renew staff at Witham Library - one of several libraries in the region where Renew provides it’s Reconnect service.

Witham Lionesses raise £195.33 from their charity shop for the Reconnect project run by Renew at the Witham Library.

Each Saturday the Lionesses donate all proceeds from the day to an allocated charity and the 30th August was our day. Lorna Wilson, our Reconnect Witham counsellor collected the cheque on behalf of Renew Counselling. Without the generosity of people donating to the Reconnect project we wouldn't be able to offer an invaluable service to the young people of Witham.

We are delighted to announce that Eddie Carden, our Chief Executive, has been elected to the Board of Governors of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

As a Governor he will play a significant part in enabling BACP to fulfil its vision of safeguarding the value of human relationships through being the leading body and voice for talking therapies.

That he was elected by a membership of 43,000 is testimony to his standing within the profession and an acknowledgement of the place that renew occupies as a counselling organisation.
